Poetry Poster
I was inspired by the poem “In Flanders Field by John McCrae, to create this typographic poster. After I read the poem several times, the phrase “the Torch” in the third stanza really stood out to me. It seemed to sum up the entirety of the poem, the loss of his fallen compatriots, and their call to the author to press onward. I knew that I wanted to use the font Bodoni to give the poster a more timeless look, as the poem was written in 1915. However, I was uncertain as to what form of imagery I should use. I experimented with different imagery and photography, but nothing seemed to work. Ultimately, I ended up arranging the different stanzas into the form of a flame and created a base for my “torch” with the word Torch. Each stanza was color coded, to help with coherence, and the order of the stanzas was designated by height The first stanza, in yellow, is at the highest point on the page, the second, the orange stanza, was placed just underneath the first, and finally
the third in red was started below
the orange.
