As I listened to this first lecture, I was amazed to discover that design was in everything, even hamburgers! I had never thought about design in this way before. As an Apparel Design and Graphic Design double major, I thought that design in Apparel design was merely creating an interesting garment, and in the case of Graphic design, a poster or advertisement for the client. However, I learned that there is so much more research and development put into a product than just making something that is aesthetic. This introduction to design was a good awakening because I saw that design is not limited to my major fields, but hidden in everything I do.
A good example of hidden design would be a Christmas tree. In the "Christmas trees from Around the World" exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry, each tree used the design principal of emphasis to represent a different country. Emphasis was placed on the unique ways that a country celebrated Christmas. Or, if the country did not celebrate Christmas on a whole, they emphasized a characteristic of the country.

The emphasis on England's tree was fancy hats.

The emphasis on this non-country tree was that the Cubs won the World Series!
